Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso could be sacked just a matter of months after taking charge of the Bernabeu side, according to a stunning report from Spain.

Alonso left Bayer Leverkusen to take command of Los Blancos in June and has recorded what is, on the face of it, a powerful start to life back in Spain.

Prior to Sunday’s Clasico, the 43-year-old has won 15 of the 18 matches he has overseen, yet Mundo Deportivo reports that behind the scenes, things are not going so smoothly for the former midfield star.

Alonso loses the confidence of board and fans

The Barcelona-based source claims: “Rumours have been circulating among Real Madrid insiders that the Basque has a lot of his reputation, and therefore his future, at stake in El Clasico.”

While there have been reports of “chaos” in the Real Madrid dressing room, this has not been reflected on the field, with Alonso leading his side to a string of victories. Los Blancos have won each of their last four matches, with their only competitive defeat since the FIFA Club World Cup a 5-2 derby loss against Atletico Madrid.

Another defeat in a high-profile game will have Alonso under pressure, according to the report.

“Xabi Alonso arrived on the Real Madrid bench this summer… but the truth is that in that short time, the Basque player has been losing credibility among fans and in the highest echelons of the club,” it claims.

“The Real Madrid team isn’t playing as everyone expected when he took over. Added to all this are the ‘firefights’ he’s had in the locker room with players like Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde, two heavyweights in the squad.”

It is claimed that defeat against Barcelona will push Alonso to the brink and potentially force Real Madrid into a rethink of their long-term strategy.
