RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko admitted that he was in talks with Manchester United over a move to Old Trafford but decided that he would be better served playing in Germany.

The Slovenian striker Sesko joined his current club for around £20million this summer, having agreed terms a year prior when he was at their cousin club, RB Salzburg.

During his time in the Austrian Bundesliga, the then-teenager scored 16 goals in 30 league matches while making seven Champions League outings.

Erik ten Hag had been on the lookout for a world-class forward to lead the line this season but failed in obtaining his main target, Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham.

It is thought that football director John Murtough had touched base with Sesko the summer before and even this year the 20-year-old was linked with a Red Devils move again.

Why Benjamin Sesko opted for Germany

But Sesko has maintained that he did not believe a move to Man Utd was in his best interests.

“The thing is, I wasn’t really involved in these kinds of conversations,” the Slovenian told Transfermarkt. "But I think it was better to come here.

"It was very important for me to go to a place that plays a similar style of football. I already knew what I had to do and didn’t have to go through a whole learning process again.

"It would be nice to play there (the Premier League). But for now, let’s focus on the now and then we’ll see.”

Man Utd brought Rasmus Hojlund to Old Trafford this summer after agreeing a £72million deal with Atalanta.

The attacker made his first appearance in the club’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal before netting his first goal against Bayern Munich in Man Utd’s Champions League encounter at the Allianz Arena.
