'Liverpool will sign another important midfielder this summer' - Romano

Liverpool have signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton but the Argentina World Cup winner will be joined by "another important midfielder" this summer according to Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool have had a torrid time in their engine room over the last year. They signed Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus with the plan to leave budget aside to bring Jude Bellingham to Anfield from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

But Arthur spent the season injured, joining fellow midfielders Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita in the treatment room, and Bellingham eventually joined Real Madrid for an initial €103 million instead.

Mac Allister's acquisition is a shrewd one; a versatile world champion who only cost £35m, but greater competition for Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Co. is being addressed.

"Let's see what happens at Liverpool, we know they are now busy with Khephren Thuram, with Manu Kone, Gabri Veiga," Romano told his YouTube channel.

'Another important midfielder'

"They are speaking to agents of many midfielders because they will sign at least another important midfielder this summer."

Thuram is understood to be at the front of that queue, the younger son of France's record cap-holder Lilian Thuram having enjoyed a breakout season with Nice which saw him follow brother Marcus into the national team set-up.

As previously revealed by FootballTransfers Jacque Talbot, Thuram has already agreed personal terms with Liverpool, but Nice would now like to trigger a bidding war with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea among those also reportedly interested.

The Guardian have previously reported that Jurgen Klopp would like to bring Nicolo Barella to the club from Inter Milan.

Either way, some hard-running in the engine room will be required, with the feeling that the Reds never sufficiently replaced Gini Wijnaldum in the middle of the park after he left for PSG the season before last.
