Man Utd make lowball offer for England star

Manchester United will offer Chelsea just £50 million for midfielder Mason Mount, according to a report.

United have already agreed personal terms with the England star, but no deal has yet been struck between the clubs.

Chelsea reportedly want as much as £80m for Mount, but Man Utd are set to offer little more than half of that, the Telegraph reports, as formal negotiations between the clubs are opened. The Red Devils believe this is a fair price for the player.

Mount’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is £59.5m (€69m) – suggesting that the Old Trafford club’s valuation of the player is closer to reality than the demands of the Blues, though there is little doubt that this is a low-ball offer.

Although there are other Premier League clubs interested in Mount – notably Liverpool and Arsenal – Man Utd are in a position of strength over the deal.

Firstly, they already have personal terms agreed with the player, who is clearly open to the move.

Secondly, they boast more financial muscle than their other rivals chasing the player, despite the fact that the stalling takeover is frustrating manager Erik ten Hag, who does not know what type of transfer budget he will have for the summer.

Finally, Mount’s situation plays into the club’s favour. The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the 2023/24 season and Chelsea cannot afford to see him depart on a free transfer.

The Telegraph reports that Chelsea are being bullish over Mount’s asking price because they do not want to lose an academy product for a price that is perceived as cheap.

Mount on Man Utd move

Mount was asked about the prospect of moving to Man Utd at the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday by Sky Sports but gave little away about his future.

He simply said: “I’m here to just enjoy this race, today. Amazing day. Can’t wait to watch it.”
