The Puskas Award, named after Hungary and Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas (late 1950s and the 1960s)

The FIFA Pukas Award was created in 2009 in honour of Real Madrid icon Ferenc Puskas, captain and star of the Hungary national team during the 1950s.

The Puskas Award is handed out to the player judged to have scored the best goal of the year.

The criteria are: an aesthetically beautiful goal, awarded without distinction of championship, gender or nationality.

Until 2018, the award was decided by a fan vote on FIFA’s official website. However, after Mohamed Salah controversially won the award that year with a rather unremarkable goal, the procedure was changed.

Now, FIFA-selected pundits choose the winner from a top three voted for by the public.
