Gavi is set to be allowed to leave Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer as La Liga will return his status at Barcelona as that of an academy player.

The Athletic report that the midfielder, whose contract has been of a long-running legal dispute, will still be able to play as normal for the La Liga club.

But a release clause that allows him to leave on a free this summer has come back into effect, amid reports that Liverpool are keen on the superstar.

Gavi’s shirt number will even revert from No.6 to his former No.30. The situation is part of an intense standoff between Barcelona and La Liga, with the league suggesting that the side are unable to also buy any players in the upcoming transfer market unless they clear themselves of debt.

The 18-year-old signed a contract extension in September until 2026 - and a clause in the deal had that the club would allow him to leave as a free agent if Barca had not registered him as a first-team player by June 30.

Barcelona have still been unable to change his status to a first-team player as it would be in breach of their salary limit rules.

Premier League clubs keen

The news has put Liverpool and Manchester City have been put on red alert, given they may be able to snap up the youngster on a free transfer.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were linked with the Spain international last summer - but he ended up remaining at the Nou Camp ahead of this season.

But that could all change now that his status as a free agent will be validated in the upcoming window.

Liverpool are looking for a fresh face to bolster the centre of the park after a torrid campaign this term where they are out of all cup competitions and look unlikely to get a Champions League spot.
