Liverpool offer Trent bumper new contract despite poor form

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set become Liverpool's third highest-paid player despite an abject start to the season before injury.

The England right-back is currently out with a hamstring injury picked up in the Reds' 3-0 win over Aston Villa at the start of September, and has missed six games for club and country since.

The academy graduate is a world class proposition going forward, but was culpable for a number of goals conceded this season and last, with Jurgen Klopp beginning to experiment with him a dual role between defence and midfield.

But that hasn't put Liverpool off from bolting their player down to a longer-term deal. Alexander-Arnold's existing contract runs until Jun 2025.

"Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle over a new contract with Trent Alexander-Arnold worth more that £55 million," reports Football Insider's Wayne Veysey.

New deal 'signed off soon'

"The new package will see Alexander-Arnold earning more than £200,000 per-week plus bonuses and is expected to be signed off soon."

Alexander-Arnold's new deal would be a 10 per cent increase on his existing one, drawing him level with Thiago Alcantara as the club's third best-paid player behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Trent is valued at €63.7 million by FootballTransfers' in-house algorithm but had a highest ETV of €103.5m the summer before last.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have both previously been linked with a move for the player, but there is little chance the former could afford him given their financial dire straits.

Alexander-Arnold find himself in the unusual position of being coveted by some of Europe's biggest clubs, but behind Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James in the pecking order of right-backs under Gareth Southgate for England.

They too have used him in midfield, and he scored from the position when they beat Malta 4-0 in Euro 2024 qualifying in June.
