Paul Scholes' doubts about Man Utd signing Harry Kane

Manchester United have been persistently linked with a summer move for Harry Kane, but Red Devils legend Paul Scholes thinks they would be making a mistake trying to sign the England captain.

United's need for extra firepower in the final third is readily apparent. Marcus Rashford has hit a team-high 15 goals in the Premier League this season but prefers playing out wide, while the man tasked with leading the line - Wout Weghorst - is yet to open his account in the league.

With Cristiano Ronaldo no longer at the club and Weghorst only signed on loan from Burnley as a stop-gap solution, a new No.9 is a priority next summer, regardless of whether the Glazer family, Sheikh Jassim or Sir Jim Ratcliffe are in ownership of the club.

United have been linked with a host of strikers, from Kane and Victor Osimhen to Randal Kolo Muani and Goncalo Ramos, but a move for Kane is seen as perhaps the most likely.

Kane would be joined by a host of England teammates at Old Trafford - Rashford, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire (if he stays) and Jadon Sancho - and it is understood he wants to add some silverware to his trophy cabinet to go alongside all of his individual goalscoring accolades.

But Scholes, who won 11 Premier Leagues and two Champions Leagues across 714 appearances with United between 1993 and 2013, thinks United could be wasting their time.

What did Scholes say?

"I think Harry is very happy where he is," he told BT Sport. "If he was going to move it would have been to Man City a couple of years ago. He would be fantastic, 25 goals guaranteed, but it's very difficult for him to move at 30 years of age.

"It's a risk as well for Man United, if you put all your eggs in that Harry Kane basket and all of a sudden Daniel Levy is messing you about and you get no one."

Kane came close to joining City the summer before last, but Levy dug his heels in, rejecting their £100m offer for the player in the hope of achieving a figure closer to £150m.
