The fire sale continues at Valencia as the club have confirmed that they have agreed to sell Geoffrey Kondogbia to Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee.

The defensive midfielder has signed a four-year deal with Diego Simeone’s side and the fee while not published is thought to be in the region of €20m.

Valencia’s financial situation is grave and there has been a mass exodus of their playing squad this season, with a number of first-team players leaving, such as Francis Coquelin and Dani Parejo signing for Villarreal on cut-price deals, while Rodrigo departed for Leeds United.

And there has been no indication that any of the players will be replaced, with boss Javi Garcia being reduced to youth talents in order to make up a matchday squad.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, have snapped up a replacement for Thomas Partey, who left for Arsenal in the transfer window.

Kondogbia has been one of Valencia’s most important players in the past few seasons, having previously spent spells at Monaco, Sevilla and Inter, and the 27-year-old’s loss will be greatly felt on a Los Che side desperately struggling for form.

A physical player who is good on the ball and provides protection for his defenders, Kondogbia’s arrival will give Simeone’s team depth as they look to challenge for La Liga title.
