Barcelona will need to move out-of-favour striker Martin Braithwaite on if they are to sign Memphis Depay in January.

Ronald Koeman has been keen on striking up a reunion with his former Netherlands charge since taking the reins at Camp Nou.

Despite hanging onto their prized asset over the summer, Lyon are currently bracing themselves for a bid in two months’ time.

However, Barca’s delicate financial situation is set to play a key role in any potential move.

The Catalan club must both lighten their wage bill and raise transfer funds before they are able to swoop for Depay.

And Braithwaite, who has played just 37 minutes so far this season, looks the ideal candidate to help them do just that.

  • The forward was recently warned that his place in Denmark’s squad for the European Championship could not at threat if he does not play more regularly.

He was reportedly close to making an £18m move to West Ham during the summer window only for the transfer to collapse.

While it remains to be seen whether that interest is reignited, both club and player will know that a January move away suits all parties.
