Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed there is an option to extend Thiago Silva’s contract by another year and has hailed the Brazilian’s impact at Stamford Bridge.

The 36-year-old joined Chelsea on a Bosman transfer after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain ran down.

And despite a rocky debut, Thiago Silva has enjoyed an impressive start to his Chelsea career – helping to stabilise a defence that was very leaky last season.

Lampard has confirmed there is an option in Silva’s one-year contract to extend it until the end of the 2021/22 season.

“I’ve seen the reports and there’s an option in Thiago’s contract that we can look at as the season goes on. Obviously with the way he is playing we are very happy,” the ex-midfielder told reporters.

  • Lampard then looked ahead to Sunday’s big London derby against Tottenham and he hopes that Thiago Silva can continue his good form against Spurs star Harry Kane.

“Harry Kane will probably play against most defences in world football and give them a problem so I don’t want to tempt fate,” he continued.

“But with Thiago’s qualities, which he has shown already positionally and through his years of experience, he can help deal with these things individually.

“As much as his individual impact, the influence is what he’s giving off to other players around him

“The major part for me when you play against clever players like Kane and Son is that your concentration levels are absolutely spot-on and you then have desire to deal with situations, to keep clean sheets, and Thiago gives off that.

“I hope his individual talent deals with them on Sunday but also as a unit we have to make sure we deal with them and Thiago is a leader at the back-end of the pitch in terms of that.”

The winner of the game at Stamford Bridge will go top of the Premier League table this weekend.
