Marcus Thuram: Who is in for France’s latest starlet?
Marcus Thuram has received his first call-up to the senior France squad.
The 23-year-old’s form for Borussia Monchengladbach has caught the eye of Didier Deschamps, earning him a place in Les Bleus’ selection for games against Finland, Portugal and Sweden.
Thuram’s inclusion marks the latest significant step in what has been a steady rise through the ranks and puts him on the brink of following in the footsteps of father, World Cup winner Lilian by pulling on a France jersey.
Season | Competition | Appearances | Minutes | Goals | Assists |
2020-21 | Bundesliga | 3 (3) | 310 | 1 | 0 |
2020-21 | Champions League | 3 | 251 | 2 | 1 |
2019-20 | Bundesliga | 28 (3) | 2217 | 10 | 8 |
2019-20 | Europa League | 6 | 520 | 2 | 0 |
Form
An ankle injury suffered toward the back end of last season made for a slow start to the new campaign for Thuram.
He has been restricted to just three starts in the Bundesliga, with a further three appearances coming off the bench, and has just one goal to his name thus far.
However, the Frenchman has shone since the Champions League got under way, helping Monchengladbach top a group containing Real Madrid, Inter and Shakhtar Donetsk.
He has two goals – both scored against Madrid, no less – and an assist to his name already, having been one of the standout performers in Europe’s premier cup competition over the first three fixtures.
Interest
Those performances and a haul of 10 goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga last term have inevitably led to interest in Thuram.
Recent reports suggest the former Guingamp man has caught the eye of Manchester City, Juventus and Barcelona.
Liverpool and Real Madrid have also been mentioned has been potential destinations in the past.
Signed by Monchengladbach for just £8m, Thuram would command a far bigger fee were he to move on any time soon.
But, as the SciSports data below shows, the winger’s development is continuing at rapid pace and there is a high ceiling on his potential.
