Manchester United are presently in the process of rebuilding their staff following the sacking of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Following the Norwegian manager out the door have been figures such as Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, creating a void that needs to be quickly filled by interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The German is set to draw upon past contacts in order to do this, with Ewan Sharp set to be the latest player brought on board at Old Trafford.

Sharp and Rangnick have a long history of working together, having first done so when the interim Man Utd boss was given the role of overseeing the sporting direction of the clubs in the Red Bull franchise in 2019.

At that point, the Scotsman was involved with the New York Red Bulls as a performance analyst, a role he held between 2017 and February 2021.

Rangnick rated him so highly that he subsequently took him to Lokomotiv Moscow, where the German was last posted, and made him an assistant coach.

Sharp is set to take up a similar role at Man Utd, having previously done the job at Toronto FC for the complete 2021 MLS season.

What are Sharp’s credentials?

Sharp may not have had any playing background worth discussing, but instead has come through the American college system, where he has studied sports.

He majored at Mercyhurst University in Sports Business Management, where he also completed a Sports Leadership Certificate in 2014. Three years later, he was awarded a Master of Business Administration by North Park University.

While he was completing his studies, he worked as a volunteer coach at Philadelphia Union and became a player development coach at the New York Red Bulls in March 2015.

Sharp moved into performance analysis four months later at Northwestern University and was snapped up again by the Red Bulls a couple of years later before falling under Rangnick’s wing.

Although the appointment of Sharp is likely to raise some eyebrows as he is effectively an unknown, it is clear that he is trusted by Rangnick and this opportunity at Man Utd represents the chance at his big break.
