Shkodran Mustafi has paid tribute to Fenerbahce-bound Arsenal star Mesut Ozil and has claimed that the playmaker was not given the assistance he required.

Ozil has confirmed that he is poised to join Fenerbahce, with a free transfer expected to be announced imminently.

The conclusion of his time at Arsenal, however, proved to be ugly. Ozil has not featured for the Gunners since March and has been involved in a long battle with the club over social media.

Mustafi, who himself finds himself on the periphery of Mikel Arteta’s plans, having featured only three times in the Premier League this season, has said that Ozil needed more support from the club.

On an Instagram post, the 28-year-old Germany star said: “Bro, you have been the most unselfish player on and off the pitch I have ever shared the dressing room with. You will always be remembered as the Assist King.

“Unfortunately, we as a team haven’t been able to assist you when you needed us the most.

“All the best for you and your family Abi.”

Ozil set for dream Fenerbahce move

Ozil is set to leave quite a legacy for Arsenal, the club that he joined in 2013 from Real Madrid. Over that period, he accumulated 254 appearances and contributed with 44 goals and 77 assists.

He is, however, poised to complete a dream move to Fenerbahce.

“I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany. Every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany. And mine was Fenerbahce,” Ozil said in a recent Twitter Q&A session. “Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.”

During that same session, Ozil named Mustafi in the greatest Arsenal XI of his era at the club. That was just one of several controversial calls he made in his selection.
