Ozil’s difficult start at Fenerbahce continues in dismal defeat
Ex-Arsenal star Mesut Ozil’s difficult start to life at Fenerbahce continued on Sunday as they fell to a dismal home defeat to Goztepe SK.
Halil Akbunar scored the only goal of the game for the away side after nine minutes to inflict another Super Lig loss on Fenerbahce.
However, he was unable to create any big chances for his team-mates as Fener suffered another costly defeat in the title race.
Ozil joined his boyhood team Fenerbahce in January on a free transfer after he agreed to terminate his contract with Arsenal six months before it expired.
Fenerbahce have not been in the best of form since his arrival. Sunday’s defeat to Goztepe means that Fener have now lost three of their last four matches in all competitions.
They have lost their last two home games in the Super Lig, which included a loss to title rivals Galatasaray.
The 32-year-old Ozil has made five appearances – two of them starts – in all competitions but has yet to score in his new shirt.
Ozil made 254 appearances for Arsenal between 2013 and 2020, scoring 44 goals and winning four FA Cup trophies.
