Denmark may have unearthed another young superstar in the form of 17-year-old forward Wahid Faghir.

At the moment the national team in Denmark is benefitting from the young talents of three previous wonderkids in Mikkel Damsgaard, Kasper Dolberg, and Andreas Skov Olsen.

In a few years they might have someone to take up that mantle in Faghir, who is earning quite the reputation due to his exploits with Vejle BK.

At just 17-years-old, it may be impossible at this point to determine whether or not Faghir will make good on his early promise, but the signs are good.

Vejle tied him down to his first professional football contract at just 15-years-old so the Danish side were clearly impressed with what they saw in him during his youth career.

He would go on to make his debut for the club in the second tier of Danish football, the 1st Division, where he would make six appearances to help Vejle win the league and subsequently earn promotion to the Superliga. He would make 10 appearances overall in his first campaign, scoring three goals.

In the 2020/21 season he has become a key member of the first team, starting 20 of the 22 matches so far in the Superliga, scoring five in that time.

When Faghir signed his first contract with Vejle, youth coach Steen Thychosen likened him to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“Wahid Faghir is a real striker and he possesses many parts in his game. He is fast, technically good, football intelligent and he also takes part in the defensive work,” he told the official club website.

 “Wahid has many strengths and then he has a huge belief in his own abilities. There is a bit of ‘Zlatan’ about him, because he performs with an indomitable self-confidence for training and fighting.

“You can’t see that he is only 15 years old.”

What clubs are interested in Wahid Faghir?

Leicester are the side hoping to get in ahead of the competition, and have allegedly already had a £1 million offer for Faghir rejected by Vejle, according to the Mirror.

Though it is probably too early to determine if Faghir is viewed as a long-term replacement for Jamie Vardy, the Foxes certainly view him as a star of the future. However, their inability to get the transfer done so far has actually alerted more clubs to the player’s availability, as well as the kind of fee it will take to prise him away from the Danish outfit.

Tottenham, too, remain interested in Faghir but have not made an official bid as of yet.

One very interesting option for the youngster could be Ajax, who have been mentioned as suitors, too.

The Dutch giants have a reputation for giving youth a chance so Faghir would be more likely to receive first team football in order to aid his development than he would perhaps receive at Leicester or Tottenham initially.

The player himself is reportedly already keen to move abroad to test himself.
