“We were extremely close, I was personally negotiating with them,” Giraldi told the Here we Go podcast.

“We weren’t able to reach an agreement. And I think Ismaila is very young, he will arrive for sure.

“He missed probably an opportunity, but I think also for his football to stay here and get those goals and assists, he’s deciding the league.

“I think for Watford in the condition they are at the moment it’s lucky he stayed.”

Liverpool are also known to be very interested in Sarr, with his Senegalese team-mate Sadio Mane publicly declaring that he wants him to move to Anfield.

Sarr has now commented on the Man Utd and Liverpool links but insists that he is happy at Vicarage Road.

“I think they are just rumours because I’m enjoying it here,” Sarr told the Watford Observer.

“I still have three years on my contract and I’m focused on Watford and I want to stay.”

Sarr joined Watford from Rennes in 2019 for a fee in the region of €35 million. He has won 32 caps for Senegal, scoring five goals, and went to the 2018 World Cup.
