‘Neymar and Mbappe should leave mediocre Ligue 1’

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have been urged to leave Paris Saint-Germain by 2005 Champions League winner Jamie Carragher.

The pair are out of contract in 2022 and could be sold by PSG in the summer if they do not agree to new deals, else they could leave for nothing next year.

While Neymar’s contract appears to be nearing completion, Mbappe has not made up his mind over his future, with Real Madrid and Liverpool among the clubs pursuing the World Cup winner.

Carragher, meanwhile, says he does not like to see the two most expensive players in the world playing in a league that he feels is mediocre and has advised them to move on.

“I don’t like to see Neymar there, at PSG,” he told CBS. “I don’t think that players of the quality of Neymar and Mbappe should be playing at PSG. They shouldn’t be playing in the French league, which is a mediocre league, average. They shouldn’t be playing week after week in Ligue 1, it’s not good.”

PSG, meanwhile, may be going well in Europe, having knocked defending champions Bayern Munich out of the Champions League on Tuesday, but domestically they face a major fight to retain their French crown.

A 1-0 home defeat by Lille a fortnight ago has left them second in the standings, trailing LOSC by three points with seven matches of the season remaining. Monaco and Lyon are also in close proximity in what is a four-way fight for glory.

PSG’s progress in the Champions League complicates matters further domestically for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but it is on the European stage that they really wish to claim glory in a bid to retain Mbappe and Neymar.
