Barcelona transfers: Every signing and sale this season
Barcelona’s 2021 summer transfer window was dominated by the exit of Lionel Messi, who departed for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in a shock move.
The Blaugrana’s well-documented financial problems also conditioned what they were able to do on the market and they did not pay a transfer fee until January, deciding to focus on free agents before the start of the campaign.
However, their winter market was extremely active as they brought in three big-name players.
So which players arrived and which players were sold over the course of the summer and winter transfer windows?
What players have Barcelona signed in 2021-22?
Sergio Aguero: Free transfer from Manchester City
Eric Garcia: Free transfer from Manchester City
Memphis Depay: Free transfer from Lyon
Yusuf Demir: Loan from Rapid Vienna
Luuk De Jong: Loan from Sevilla
Dani Alves: Free Transfer
Ferran Torres: €65m from Man City
Adama Traore: Loan from Wolves
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Free transfer from Arsenal
Barcelona began the summer of 2021 a staggering €1.2 billion in debt, which meant they were completely restricted in the transfer market.
Subsequently, the Blaugrana did not pay a transfer fee for a single player who has remained at the club this season – with Emerson immediately shipped off to Tottenham after returning from Real Betis.
Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia both arrived on free transfers from Man City, although the former sadly had to retire in December due to a heart issue.
Memphis Depay was arguably Barca’s biggest signing of the summer, although the Dutch star also joined on a Bosman after his Lyon contract expired.
Luuk de Jong was a surprise deadline day loan signing from Sevilla after being specifically requested by manager Ronald Koeman.
Youngster Yusuf Demir came in on a one-year loan, too, from Rapid Vienna, but was sent back mid-season.
Dani Alves made a romantic return on a free transfer ahead of the January transfer window.
Before the winter window, Barca somehow managed to raise enough funds to sign Man City attacker Ferran Torres for €55m, plus €10m in add-ons.
With just two days left of the winter window, Barcelona brought in Adama Traore on loan from Wolves. The lightning-fast winger returned to the club he grew up at.
They ended the January window by signing Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with manager Xavi desperate to bring in a goalscorer.
What players have Barcelona sold in 2021-22?
Konrad de la Fuente: €3.5m to Marseille
Matheus Fernandes: Free transfer to Palmeiras
Juan Miranda: Free transfer to Real Betis
Jean-Clair Todibo: €8.5m – to Nice
Lionel Messi: Free transfer to PSG
Junior Firpo: Free transfer to Leeds Utd
Sergio Akieme: €3.5m – to Almeria
Carles Alena: €5m – to Getafe
Monchu: Free transfer to Granada
Ilaix Moriba: €16m – to Leipzig
Emerson: €25m – to Tottenham
Sergio Aguero: Retired
Barcelona made an impressive €76.5m in the summer by selling players, helping to ease the financial burdens on the club.
However, there were two very painful departures that Barcelona were devastated to be unable to prevent.
The first was Lionel Messi as Barcelona were unable to register his contract due to their debts and economic instability. The 34-year-old thus joined PSG on a free transfer.
Barcelona also were forced to sell wonderkid Ilaix Moriba to Leipzig due to the fact he was refusing to sign a new contract that was to expire next season.
What players have Barcelona loaned out in 2021-22?
Francisco Trincao: One-year loan to Wolves
Rey Manaj: One-year loan to Spezia
Antoine Griezmann: One-year loan to Atletico Madrid
Miralem Pjanic: One-year loan to Besiktas
Alex Collado: Six-month loan to Granada
Philippe Coutinho: Six-month loan to Aston Villa
Inaki Pena: Six-month loan to Galatasaray
Barcelona loaned out a number of players over the course of the season.
The first four were loaned out in the summer, with Collado, Coutinho and Inaki Pena sent away in January as Barca tried to cut costs.
Atletico Madrid have the option to extend Antoine Griezmann’s loan for another year, as well as an option to buy that Wolves also possess with Francisco Trincao.
Miralem Pjanic was moved on having barely played under Ronald Koeman in 2020-21 after his big transfer from Juventus.
