Barcelona are working on strengthening their squad, and a lot of that has been in the form of extending the contracts of their current squad.

Their first objective was to extend the contract of Ronald Araujo, which they are close to, and are now working on extending youngster Gavi’s deal.

The 17-year-old midfielder has been a part of the first team this season and has been impressive, even making his debut for the Spanish national team.

Barcelona looking to extend academy graduates' contracts

Barcelona want to get the extension complete before the month of May, with rumours of interest in the player from Liverpool.

Gavi previously had a release clause of €50 million, but that will increase drastically to €1 billion once the new contract is agreed upon.

Other than Gavi, Barcelona are also focusing on extending another academy graduate’s contract, having been in talks with Sergi Roberto’s representatives.

It was widely believed that Roberto would leave the club this summer, but Xavi’s intervention has proven to be key and he wants to keep the player at the club this summer.

Roberto is in the final few months of his contract and could leave the club on a free this summer, but the club have expressed their proposal to him over the last week.

The belief is that Barcelona have offered the 30-year-old a further two years, with an option for a further year depending on performances and appearances.

However, Roberto will have to take a wage cut if he wants to join, and that may be a stumbling block in talks as he has offers from other clubs.

Roberto has been at the club since 2006, and made his debut with the first team in 2010 under Pep Guardiola.

Since then, he has played in both midfield and at right-back, and that versatility made him a useful squad option under managers like Ernesto Valverde and Ronald Koeman.
