Man Utd make €70m Milinkovic-Savic their De Jong alternative
Manchester United will turn to Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as one of their alternatives should their move to sign Frenkie de Jong fail, FootballTransfers understands.
The Lazio star, 27, is on a shortlist of secondary options for incoming boss Erik ten Hag should their move for Frenkie de Jong fail to come to fruition.
The Barcelona star is being weighed up by the Man Utd hierarchy - but the Red Devils will look to other options if the deal doesn’t come off.
Milinkovic-Savic has been a target for Man Utd for a number of years and a move could certainly be on the cards considering they’re set to lose Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba on free transfers this summer.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito recently claimed that he had turned down a €140 million bid for the attacking midfielder - but Footballtransfers is told that it’s more than likely this was a guise to raise the Serbian’s value this summer.
As has been reported in the Italian media, €70 million should be enough to purchase Milinkovic-Savic this summer, if not less.
PSG, meanwhile, will also enter the race for Milinkovic-Savic if they fail to sign Paul Pogba.
The Manchester United star will leave on a free transfer this summer, but Juventus are currently favourites to bring him back to Turin.
Juventus are also admirers of Milinkovic-Savic but they have prioritised Pogba.
Will Milinkovic-Savic finally leave Lazio
Milinkovic-Savic has been linked with a move away from Rome for a number of years, but he is now coming into his final two years of the contract at the Stadio Olimpico, with it ending in June 2024.
Roberto De Fanti, the Italian super-agent, with an ear to Serie A, recently said to CaughtOffside: “I believe this summer could be the time that Milinkovic-Savic leaves Lazio and I won’t be surprised if the destination is Manchester United. I can say for sure that there are already whispers in the industry that he could move to Old Trafford in time for next season."
Meanwhile, Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri said that the player will not be sticking around in Serie A if he does depart.
"I'm not sure that Milinkovic-Savic will leave this summer as it's not easy but I'm convinced that if it happens, Milinkovic will sign for a foreign club and not an Italian one.”
Milinkovic-Savic has made 293 appearances for Lazio, scoring 58 goals.
