Robert Lewandowski could become the second most expensive player in history over the age of 30 if he completes his expected transfer to Barcelona.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich are in negotiations to complete a deal for the 33-year-old Poland striker this summer.

Barcelona have made Lewandowski their number one target for the summer transfer window and they have been in talks to sign the former Borussia Dortmund star since March.

Lewandowski, whose contract at Bayern expires in 2023, is keen to make the move to Camp Nou as he would like one final challenge at a bit club before the end of his career.

Barcelona are reported to already have had two bids of €32 million and €40m rejected by Bayern.

Barcelona are set to table a new and improved €50 million offer but, according to Sky Germany, Bayern are holding out for €60m.

Should they receive €60m, it would make Lewandowski the joint-second most expensive player in history over the age of 30.

He would match the sum that Barcelona controversially paid for Miralem Pjanic from Juventus in 2019, although that was part of a swap deal that saw Arthur Melo go the other way for slightly more in a deliberately inflated exchange to balance the books.

The most expensive over-30 player in history is Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo transferred from Real Madrid to Juventus for an incredible €117m in 2018 while at the age of 33.

Other stars to transfer for big money over the age of 30 include Paulinho (€42m) to Barcelona, Leonardo Bonucci (€42m) to AC Milan and Radja Nainggolan (€38m) to Inter Milan.

Lewandowski is desperate to make the move to Barcelona and has made a number of recent public declarations stating that he sees his time at Bayern as over and demanding for the club to let him leave.

This has led to an ugly war of words developing between Lewandowski and Bayern officials.

Earlier this week, Lewandowski told reporters that “no other offers were even considered by me other than that of Barcelona. I want to leave Bayern, that's clear."

Barcelona have recently received a capital injection which should allow them to soon start spending money on the transfer market.
