Newcastle are actively pursuing RB Salzburg's teenage midfielder Luka Sucic, FootballTransfers understands.

Interest in the 19-year-old dates back to late last year when the club met with intermediaries of then SC Freiburg defender Nico Schlotterbeck – who shares the same representatives - regarding a possible January move.

Newcastle are now back in for the 19-year-old Croatia international, who fits the club’s ambition to bring in a young midfielder who can develop under manager Eddie Howe.

Sucic has been deployed on the right-hand side of a 4-3-3 formation and is a threat going forward, clocking 11 goals in all competitions last season in the Austrian Bundesliga.

WHO ARE THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS IN THE WORLD?

Salzburg are understood to be requesting around €20 million but the departure of star man Karim Adeyemi provides the club with a degree of wiggle room on the price.

The German side are aiming to win their first Bundesliga title next season and wish to keep hold of all their top talent, including Christopher Nkunku.

But it is clear that there has been some noise generated deliberately from a party who wishes to see the attacker make a move.

Sources in Italy indicated that an approach for Nicolo Zaniolo was made but subsequently turned down owing to the fact Roma wanted a price reflective of the player’s status as one of Serie A’s brightest stars.

And Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta, heavily linked to Newcastle, would cost too much for a position that is not a priority and this is a move that is unlikely to happen.

We reported last month that Newcastle had taken a look at Watford’s Ismaila Sarr (pictured below), with Antonio Rudiger’s agent acting as a middle-man.

There now appears to be genuine interest there, as too with Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby.

But the state of play at Leverkusen means that he could prove too costly.

As for Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi, no meeting between the player and the Premier League side has taken place recently despite reports to the contrary.
