David de Gea contract talks prompt backlash

David de Gea has reportedly turned down Manchester United's new contract offer - leading some supporters to rage over latest development.

The Spaniard is in talks with the club as they try to cut down his mammoth £375,000-per-week wages. The Athletic report that a deal will be agreed upon despite De Gea turning down the initial proposal.

Erik ten Hag sees De Gea as a good fit and believes that any funds the club get should be going towards other areas of the pitch. But the move has not gone down too well with some supporters, who believe that the club should be looking to bring in a replacement ahead of next season.

De Gea here to stay

The 32-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, going on to make over 500 outings for the Red Devils. He recently surpassed Peter Schmeichel’s record of having the club’s all-time record holder for clean sheets with 183. Man Utd want to reduce his salary but so far nothing has been agreed upon.

It is believed that the arrival of Alexis Sanchez on a deal of more than £400,000 per week allowed De Gea to gain leverage in talks with then-chief executive Ed Woodward over a significant pay rise.

But there have been questions about whether he is capable of playing as a modern goalkeeper, with onus on passing and sweeping.
