Liverpool have been told that they must cough up £70million for Mason Mount as talks progress between the player in the club.

In January we revealed that Mount and the Reds had been having talks behind-closed downs ahead of a possible move.

On Thursday, The Athletic have affirmed this, saying that the midfielder is still yet to agree on fresh terms with Chelsea and Liverpool leading the list of suitors for his signature- while talks have been taking place behind the scenes.

The Blues have not given up hope of persuading Mount of remaining at Stamford Bridge but so far there has not been any indication that he will sign.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham are all looking at Mount ahead of the summer transfer window, while Arsenal may even opt to come in as they look to bolster their midfield.

But it looks as though the leaders as Liverpool in the race to sign the 24-year-old. The Reds have Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of contract this summer - while Arthur Melo will return to Juventus, and Jordan Henderson and Thiago are pushing into their thirties.

Indeed, the report states that significant conversations have taken place between the Reds and Mount and at the moment they seem like the most likely club to buy him, which tallies with FootballTransfers story earlier this year.

Interest from Germany

There had been reports that Bayern Munich had an interest in bringing Mount, which would mean a reunion with their new boss Thomas Tuchel. But reports in Germany shot the idea down, saying the Bundesliga club have enough players in that position, such as Thomas Muller, Sadio Mane and Jamal Musiala.

Mount agreed to his current deal at Chelsea in 2019 after his loan at Derby County in the Championship. He signed in terms far below £100,000 per week and he remains on that wage to this day. Talks may also be hampered by the influx of new players that the Blues have brought in over the last two transfer windows.
