Man Utd face competition from Barcelona and Bayern Munich for top transfer target
Manchester United could face competition from Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the chase for one of their top transfer targets this summer.
United are expected to continue their rebuild under Erik ten Hag after spending in excess of £200 million during his first transfer window last year, with a striker such as Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen thought to be top of the club’s shopping list.
However, among their other targets is believed to be a right back and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong is understood to be United’s ideal option.
IDEAL: Why Frimpong would be 'perfect' for Man Utd
United have held talks over signing the 22-year-old but according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, Barca and Bayern have also been in contact with the player’s agent.
The expectation is that Frimpong will leave Leverkusen in the summer after the German club resisted interest in the Dutchman in January, with his contract set to expire in 2025.
Romano believes approaches for Frimpong will start at €25 million, who has grabbed eight goals and six assists this season.
Why Aaron Wan-Bissaka could determine United’s Frimpong move
A move for Frimpong by United could come down to the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the 25-year-old still facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford despite playing his way back into first team contention in recent months.
Wan-Bissaka was told he could leave United last summer but he ended up staying at the club as no satisfactory bids came in, however he only played four minutes of football prior to the World Cup break.
TARGETS: Frimpong not the only right back on United's shortlist
An injury to first-choice right-back Diogo Dalot allowed Wan-Bissaka an extended run in the first team and the ex-Crystal Palace man has made 21 appearances in all competitions since, due to his positive displays.
However, despite his form, Wan-Bissaka has once again lost his place to Dalot in the first team, prompting speculation that he could leave in the summer, with United chasing a more attacking right back.
The future of Dalot is also still uncertain, with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid interested in a player who has yet to commit his long-term future to United.
Frimpong’s attacking capabilities means that United are likely to pursue him in a move which would likely see one of the club’s right-backs leave, with Wan-Bissaka expected to be the odd man out should a transfer materialise.
