Five stars who will miss Euro 2024 without a January transfer
The winter transfer window opens in less than two months and there are many reasons why players want to move clubs.
One of these reasons is in order to gain playing time ahead of Euro 2024.
There are a number of top footballers who risk missing out on a call-up for their nation for the finals in Germany, unless they start playing more regularly.
We look at five such players in this predicament.
Jadon Sancho (Man Utd)
Jadon Sancho is certain to leave Man Utd in January, at the very least on loan, after a public fall-out with manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag left Sancho out of his 18-man squad for the Premier League match against Arsenal in September, and said he wasn’t picked because of his poor performance in training. This prompted an angry reaction from Sancho immediately after on social media as he denied Ten Hag’s accusations and essentially called him a liar.
Sancho has since been frozen out of the first team squad. The wideman also knows that there is no chance of him being picked by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024 unless he leaves Man Utd.
Former club Borussia Dortmund and some Italian teams have been linked with a move in January.
Donny van de Beek (Man Utd)
Man Utd outcast Donny van de Beek is “very likely” to leave the club in January, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Van de Beek was transfer listed during the summer transfer window but failed to secure a move away, despite strong interest from Real Sociedad.
But the attacking midfielder will almost certainly leave in the January transfer window having been left surplus to requirements.
This season, Van de Beek has played just two minutes of football in the Premier League.
He will find himself a new club in January, also with a view for Euro 2024 next summer. Ronald Koeman, Netherlands manager, has made it clear Van de Beek needs to be playing regularly.
Eric Dier (Tottenham)

Eric Dier has an excellent chance of leaving Tottenham in the January transfer market, having become an outcast at the club. Dier did not play a single minute of football this season under new manager Ange Postecoglou until coming on as an enforced substitute in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday.
The Australian has made it clear Dier does not fit in his plans. The 29-year-old needs a move if he is to have any chance of going to Euro 2024. Southgate has shown he will pick players who play semi-regularly for their clubs - like Harry Maguire - but Dier is playing so little that he has thus fallen off the England radar.
There is interest in Serie A from his former Spurs coach Jose Mourinho, whose Roma team are in the market for a centre back.
Ciro Immobile (Lazio)
At the age of 33, Ciro Immobile is starting to show his age and he has been declining over the last year or so.
Immobile is no longer the player who until recently was one of Europe’s most consistent goalscorers.
This season he has been disappointing and he has lost his first-team shirt over the last weeks to Taty Castellanos.
His Italy squad place is also very much under threat from the likes of Gianluca Scamacca, Giacomo Raspadori, Moise Kean and Matteo Retegui, all of whom look better picks.
A Janaury transfer to rediscover himself could give him the new lease of life he needs.
Anthony Martial (Man Utd)
Anthony Martial has not played for France since 2021 and it is easy to see why given his dismal performances for Man Utd in the last few seasons.
It has been clear for some time now that Martial needs a transfer away from Old Trafford in order to rescue not only his club career but also his international career.
With France boasting top class attackers like Kylian Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani, Marcus Thuram and Olivier Giroud, there is no hope of Martial going to the Euros unless he joins a new team and starts firing.
