There were new reports in recent days that potential new Man Utd sporting director Paul Mitchell travelled to Spain to watch Greenwood play for Getafe last week.

This was done in view, according to Spanish media, of Greenwood being brought back to play for Man Utd in 2024-25.

Mitchell has been tipped to be United’s new transfer chief when Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS complete their £1.25 billion investment in the club in order to acquire a 25% stake.

But transfer journalist Jacobs does not buy these reports. He reports that Man Utd’s official position is that Greenwood will never play for the club again.

Jacobs adds that it makes little sense for Mitchell to go out and watch or speak to Greenwood while this is the official position.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan during the summer after United concluded their investigation into the criminal charges he was facing last year, which have since been dropped.

United announced that Greenwood would look to continue his career away from Old Trafford, having not played a game since January 2022 following his arrest by police.

Man Utd investigation on Greenwood

The 22-year-old was initially earmarked by United for a return to the first team after an internal investigation by the club but these plans were shelved following a negative reaction to the speculation and Greenwood was eventually told to leave the club.

However, with his contract due to expire in 2025, United had never explicitly stated what the plans were for Greenwood upon his return from loan, with the club focusing on the immediate steps to continue his career rather than the long-term path.

Thus, the door is still not completely shut - even if the bad PR from any possible return makes it difficult.

Greenwood has scored three goals and got three assists in 10 games for Getafe in all competitions this season.
