Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has tipped Manchester United to sack Erik ten Hag in the event of another bad defeat at the weekend.

Man Utd travel to Anfield on Sunday to play Liverpool, with the former Ajax manager under severe pressure.

United have made their worst start to a Premier League season in over 30 years, having already lost seven games and with a goal difference in the minus.

And Burley believes that a heavy defeat to their rivals on Sunday could spell the end for Ten Hag.

What did Burley say about Ten Hag?

“I don’t see how if Man Utd go to Liverpool and get hammered, he can survive,” Burley said on ESPN.

“If Liverpool spank United, with the reaction of the fans and the media - given all these recent results - I just don’t see how this club can sit back and say ‘we are not going to do anything’”

Ten Hag joined Man Utd in the summer of 2022 and enjoyed a decent first season as he took the club back into the Champions League, won the League Cup and reached the FA Cup final.

However, the 2023-24 campaign has been a total disaster for Ten Hag. United have lost seven of their 16 Premier League games and face a big struggle to finish in the top four.

They are already out of the League Cup but worst of all were humiliated in the Champions League group stages.

Despite being drawn in one of the weaker groups together with Galatasaray and Copenhagen, they finished bottom of the pool as the Danes and Bayern Munich progressed.

United picked up just four points and conceded 15 goals, the most ever by an English team in the groups in the history of the tournament.

Ten Hag has fallen out with a host of players during his time at the club, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, while he has a poor relationship with others.

Having lost 3-0 at home too Bournemouth last weekend and then 1-0 at home again on Tuesday to Bayern, a third straight loss to Liverpool could spell the end for Ten Hag.
