EXCLUSIVE: Brentford identify Jonathan David as Ivan Toney replacement

Brentford are contemplating a summer move for Jonathan David, who Thomas Frank believes can replace Ivan Toney, FootballTransfers can reveal.

The 24-year-old has been a consistent goalscorer since he made his senior debut with Gent as an 18-year-old in 2018. His efforts since then have propelled Lille over the past two years, seeing him emerge as one of the best strikers in the world, even though this campaign has been marked by a downturn in form.

Sources have informed FootballTransfers that Frank is hoping that David could continue his form with the Ligue 1 outfit and soften the blow of losing their star man Toney, who is liked by Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

According to our information, David has always been greatly admired by the Brentford manager. We have been told he was very impressed by the striker in the summer when the Bees took on Lille at the Gtech Community Stadium in a friendly a week before the start of the Premier League season.

How much would Jonathan David cost?

David is a versatile forward who excels with both feet. He's arguably better playing off a target man as opposed to leading the line himself, but his multi-faceted skill set means he can perform both roles adeptly. His goals have propelled Lille over the past two years, establishing him as one of the best strikers in the world.

Brentford would be expected to pay around €50m for David's signature, whose contract runs out in 18 months. With the Bees expected to receive at least €60m for Toney, it's certainly a figure that's within reach.

Lille will be reluctant to let their star man leave, but their hand may be forced by the Canadian, who is desperate to sign for a Premier League club.

However, the west London outfit won't have a free run in trying to sign the player. Clubs like Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Newcastle have also registered their interest.
