Erling Haaland has fired back at comments from Trent Alexander-Arnold suggesting that Liverpool’s success ‘means more’ than Manchester City’s trophies ahead of the clash between the sides this weekend.

City travel to Anfield sitting a point behind their opponents at the top of the table and looking to retain their Premier League trophy, while Liverpool will be hoping to round off Jurgen Klopp’s era with the title before he departs in the summer.

The match up will have an extra layer of tension following Alexander-Arnold’s comments this week, with the right-back claiming the financial ‘machine’ behind City’s success meant that Liverpool’s trophies had more meaning to their fans.

“It’s difficult,” the Liverpool star told FourFourTwo. “You’re up against a machine that’s built to win – that’s the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.

“Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.

“How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it probably means more to our fans.”

Alexander Arnold ‘doesn’t know the feeling of a treble’ claims Haaland

City have won 16 trophies since Guardiola joined the club in 2016, including the treble last season, while Liverpool have lifted eight trophies during Klopp’s nine-year tenure.

Alexander-Arnold’s comments were put to Haaland and the Norwegian striker responded with a subtle dig of his own, claiming the Liverpool star didn’t understand the feeling of winning a treble.

“If he wants to say that, okay,” Haaland told Sky Sports. “I’ve been here one year and I’ve won the treble and it was quite a nice feeling. I don’t think he knows exactly this feeling, it was quite nice.

“He can talk as much as he wants. I don’t know why he does that but I don’t mind.”
