Southgate issues 'come and get me' plea to Man Utd

Gareth Southgate has issued what some have construed as a ‘come and get me’ plea to Manchester United.

Southgate admitted in an interview with Bild on Monday that if he doesn’t win Euro 2024 with England then he is unlikely to stay on as manager.

The Three Lions boss is currently considered the favourite to replace Erik ten Hag as manager of Man Utd.

Ten Hag has still not been sacked, with many believing that his future is tied to that of Southgate’s.

England kick off their Euro 2024 campaign on Sunday against Serbia, and there are reports that United are waiting for the Three Lions’ tournament to end before announcing Southgate as their new manager.

What did Southgate say?

“If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore. So maybe it is the last chance," Southgate said.

"I think around half the national coaches leave after a tournament — that’s the nature of international football.

“I’ve been here almost eight years now and we’ve come close. You can’t constantly put yourself in front of the public and say, ‘A little more please’, as at some point people lose faith.

"If we want to be a great team and I want to be a top coach, you must deliver in big moments.”

Ten Hag is expected to be sacked by new Man Utd part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe after a difficult 2023-24 season.

Ten Hag joined Man Utd in the summer of 2022 and enjoyed a decent first season as he took the club back into the Champions League, won the League Cup and reached the FA Cup final.

However, the 2023-24 campaign was a total disaster for Ten Hag in the Premier League and Champions League.

United finished eighth in the Premier League and were knocked out in the Champions League group stages.

They did, however, win the FA Cup by beating Man City at Wembley.
