Fans on social media are demanding that Chelsea sell Enzo Fernandez following the racism scandal that has rocked the club.

Article continues under the video

Enzo and a group of Argentina teammates were filmed celebrating their Copa America victory in which they chanted a derogatory song about the France national team.

The song in question has been called racist and transphobic as it contains a number of references to the African heritage of France players, as well a transgender insult.

The French Football Federation has announced that it is filing a legal complaint against what it calls "racially offensive and discriminatory remarks" made by Argentina players.

Enzo has apologised on social media for his behaviour.

"The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words," he said.

"I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.

"That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character.

"I am truly sorry."

Chelsea also released a statement and confirmed that they have opened disciplinary proceedings.

What did Chelsea say?

“Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable,” the statement read.

“We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.

“We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.

“The Club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure.”

Enzo’s actions, though, have infuriated a number of his own Chelsea teammates.

Wesley Fofana reposted the video on X with the words: "Football in 2024: uninhibited racism".

It has also been reported elsewhere that at least three Chelsea players, including Fofana, have unfollowed Enzo on Instagram.

And many Chelsea fans - and supporters elsewhere - have called for the club to sell Enzo.
