Chelsea told Gallagher that he might not be allowed back into the first team if he turned down a move to Atletico Madrid, according to a report in The Times.

It's also thought that Gallagher had already rejected two new contract offers from Chelsea amid talks of an exit.

The club warned Gallagher he could face 'exile' from the first team and their Cobham training facility if he did not sign for Atletico.

In addition to the Spanish side's offer, Chelsea expected Tottenham to make a rival bid in the coming days.

The Premier League rivals have been a long-standing admirer of Gallagher but ultimately wanted to prioritise signing a striker.
