Manchester United previous season might forever be tainted by their lowest-ever Premier League finish, but there was a beacon of hope in the form of emerging young talents.

Their string of injuries was a double-edged sword. While it hampered the squad, it allowed the rise of young players. Kobbie Mainoo has been a revelation. Such was his ability, within the short space he returned from being injured, he managed to forge a spot in the Man Utd line-up, while he was also a starter for England in their Euro 2024 campaign.

Like Mainoo during last year’s pre-season, Harry Amass has impressed this time around, being the latest in Man Utd's talents to break onto the scene. But who is the teenager?

What position does Harry Amass play?

Amass plays as a left-back. It’s widely believed he’s the club’s eventual replacement for Luke Shaw.

How good is Harry Amass?

Since joining from Watford last year, Amass has made significant strides. Indeed, he was a breakout player in the club’s otherwise underwhelming pre-season tour of the States, while he earned a call-up to the Man Utd first team ahead of their Community Shield clash with Manchester City.

Amass was snapped up by the Hornets at the age of nine. He represented the England national team at the Under-15 level in 2022, progressing to Under-16 and Under-17 appearances thereafter.

Amass was selected by then-Watford coach Slaven Bilic on the bench for an FA Cup third-round tie against Reading in January 2023, at the age of 15.

He didn’t make the side but the call-up was a testament to his ability at that point. Soon other clubs started to take notice.

FootballTransfers revealed that Man Utd beat the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to his signature, which was officially announced in August 2023.

Amass was among the best performers in the Under-18s at Man Utd. He was swiftly promoted to the U21s. By this year, Amass, at just 16, was training with the first team.

He made his appearance on the bench for a Premier League game against Liverpool in April and was included in six Premier League matchday squads. The teenager made his first-team debut during United’s pre-season friendly against Rosenborg, in Los Angeles.

Amassis a fierce tackler unafraid of showing aggression. Despite his young age, he is a physical presence. He is very much an old-school full-back in that regard. The technical side of his game will be nurtured in time.

Amass already believes he can take on minutes at the senior level next season. "My intention is to play first-team football at this club," he has said this summer. "I think if the opportunity comes, I’ve got to take it with both hands, it could change my career. I am just waiting for that moment, I am ready."

"I enjoy it. In front of the crowds, playing with the best players, I’m enjoying it. You’ve just got to show your aggressive side. You might be young, smaller than the opponent, but you have to show you are aggressive and don’t back down. Then you can have a good game."
