It goes from bad to worse for Ruben Amorim.

The 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Monday evening means that United have now lost four matches in a row since their dramatic derby victory over rivals Man City.

All in all, Amorim has now lost five of his first eight league matches in charge at United since succeeding Erik ten Hag last month.

In doing so, Amorim has equalled the worst-ever league start by a Manchester United manager in the club’s history.

Only two other managers have lost five of their first eight league games at United.

The last manager to do so was John Chapman 103 years ago in December 1921; the other was AH Albut way back in October 1892.

The stats certainly make sorry reading as United have conceded a whopping 20 goals in 11 matches in all competitions under Amorim, as performances and results only get worse.

United are now down in 14th place in the Premier League at the halfway stage of the season after 19 games.

They are just seven points above the relegation zone and Amorim has even admitted they are in a survival fight.

What did Amorim say?

"That is really clear [we are in a relegation fight] and we have to fight,” he said after the defeat to Newcastle.

"We have to acknowledge our position... we have to win games and focus on surviving.

"It's also my fault in this moment, because I think the team has not improved, I think (it) is a little bit lost in this moment.

"It's a little bit embarrassing to be a Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games. But we have to cope with that, difficult moments in the life of everybody. It's a hard moment.

"I don't like to arrive here and make excuses. I think people are tired of excuses in this club. And I think sometimes I talk about relegation because of that - I think our club needs a shock and we have to understand that.

"It's a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game and to implement the idea to win games and to have also performance, because I think we are losing some things from the last games."
