How Chiesa could join Bayern Munich instead of Juventus next season
Former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has suggested that Juventus winger Federico Chiesa would be a perfect signing for his former club.
The Italy international has quickly developed into one of Europe’s most promising players following his success in Serie A and with the Azzurri at Euro 2020.
And while Chiesa is expected to sign a permanent deal with Juventus in the summer, Rummenigge believes he could yet don the colours of the Bavarian giants in the future.
“I can confirm that he is a great player. Chiesa has always shown that, in the national team, at Juve and Fiorentina. He's a player for Bayern Munich," said Rummenigge in an interview with Italian broadcaster RTV38.
But how likely are Bayern to stand a chance of signing him at the end of the season if Chiesa opts for a move away from Juventus?
Why Juve may not be able to keep him
While Chiesa is currently a Juventus player, it’s easy to forget that the Italy international is still only on loan from Fiorentina. And that means his future at the Turin club is far from settled.
According to Calciomercato, Juve paid just €3 million to bring Chiesa to the club on loan last season and had the option to complete the deal by paying the rest of the agreed fee of €50 million.
However, due to the financial impact of COVID, Juve deferred the payment for another year by paying €7m to loan Chiesa for a final season. Which means they will now have to pay around €40m at the end of this season.
Whether Juve will be able to stump up that kind of money in the summer remains to be seen. And whether Chiesa will want to stay at a club lingering in mid-table is also a rather large question that still needs a definitive answer.
Why Bayern may tempt him to Germany
This, conveniently, is where Bayern could undoubtedly step in. If Juventus are unable to make the final payment of around €40m, Fiorentina will quickly consider offers from other clubs.
Although Bayern don’t often like to spend more than they have to in the market, they do put their money where their mouth is when it comes to special players. And as we’ve seen with Lucas Hernandez, Leroy Sane or Dayot Upamecano, the German club have plenty of spending power when they need it.
Add to that the prospect of Kingsley Coman being sold in the summer if he doesn’t lower his wage demands and an offer for Chiesa to slot in for the France international next season seems to make plenty of fiscal and sporting sense for Bayern.
