Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has labelled suggestions that the club are preparing to sell Leroy Sane a “nonsense” and is convinced the former Manchester City star will be a success for the German and European champions.

Sane made the move from England to Bavaria in the summer of 2020 for a reported fee of £41 million.

However, the German international has struggled to break into Hansi Flick’s team and nail down a regular, first-team spot.

The 25-year-old has started just eight of Bayern’s 17 Bundesliga games to date, with a return of just four goals and five assists in 15 appearances.

Despite that, Rummenigge believes the club’s investment in the former Schalke youth product will be paid off tenfold when Sane does eventually begin to show his talents in Munich.

“He has a five-year contract,” said the Bayern CEO when asked about Sane’s future at the club by BILD

“That would be nonsense. We need this type of player. Of course he will stay with Bayern. And I am convinced: He will be a success here.”

Despite joining as Bayern’s biggest transfer of the year, Sane arrived at a club that was already pretty well stocked when it came to established, attacking players on either wing.

Not only did Flick have French international Kingsley Coman on one wing, but he also had Serge Gnabry on another.

And when we add Douglas Costa – who returned to the club on loan from Juventus in the same window as Sane – it’s easy to see why Sane had a considerable amount of competition to contend with.

Despite that, Sane has shown glimpses of what he could offer his new club. The winger scored and provided two assists in Bayern’s 8-0 demolishing of Schalke on the opening day of the season, as well as important goals or assists against Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and Gladbach.
