Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong set to sign for Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen are set to sign Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong for a reported fee of €11 million.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Celtic manager Neil Lennon confirmed that the player was currently abroad agreeing a deal with another club.
And while Lennon was unwilling to confirm which club had approached Celtic to sign the defender, FootballTransfers understands that it is Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
“Jeremie is abroad at the minute speaking to a club,” Lennon told the media on Tuesday. “That deal looks like it may go through.
“This hasn’t appeared in the last couple of days, this has been in the background for the last six or seven weeks.
“The club have made great strides to renegotiate with Jeremie and his representatives but the player made it clear to me, to the board, that he wanted to leave.
“I wouldn’t say he was unhappy, just ambitious maybe or he wanted to try something else to progress his career at another club.”
The Dutch defender joined Celtic in 2019 on a four-year contract after making the move from Manchester City’s youth team.
In two years Frimpong was fast-tracked into the Scottish side, thanks to his remarkable speed and dribbling skills.
Frimpong was part of the side that won the domestic treble in the 2019/20 seasons, when Celtic won the Scottish Premiership, as well as the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
