Former Crystal Palace midfielder Max Meyer poised to return to Germany with Hoffenheim

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Max Meyer is set to make a return to the Bundesliga by signing a contract to join Hoffenheim.

FootballTransfers understands that the German midfielder is poised to make the move back to Germany to rebuild his career and return to the kind of form he had shown at Schalke as a young and exciting prospect.

The 25-year-old talent was allowed to leave Palace earlier this month when he and the Premier League club came to a mutual agreement to cancel his contract.

The decision came after a horrible spell in London, which saw Meyer struggle to match the expectations set by his move to Palace in August 2018. Over the course of three seasons at the English club, Meyer made just 56 appearances and scored just two goals.

Meyer got his breakthrough at the Gelsenkirchen club during the 2012/13 season when he stepped into Schalke’s first team as a replacement for Lewis Holtby at just 17 years of age.

He left Crystal Palace a few days ago, with the club announcing his release via a statement on their official club website:

“Max Meyer has left Crystal Palace Football Club by mutual consent.

“The German midfielder made 56 appearances for the club, scoring twice, since his move to south London in the summer of 2018.

“Everyone at Crystal Palace F.C. thanks Max for his efforts whilst with us, and wishes him all the very best for the future.”

Palace are on the lookout for a new striker in the January transfer window, and are reportedly close to the signing of Jean-Philippe Mateta from Bundesliga outfit Mainz.
