Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool defender Markus Babbel has blasted “annoying” Robert Lewandowski over his contract statement with the German giants.

The Poland international will enter the final year of his contract in the summer, which could lead to the Bavarian giants selling the striker if he’s unwilling to sign an extension to his deal.

Lewandowski was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona this week, when FootballTransfers revealed that the Catalan side had given up on their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

Barcelona join Manchester United as potential suitors for Lewandowski if he doesn’t sign a new contract at the club, with the striker recently revealing that he has yet to be offered terms for a new deal.

However, while things still hang in the balance, Babbel believes the club’s star striker needs to get over himself and appreciate what he has in Munich.

“This howling around is annoying,” said Babbel on Sky Sports Germany about Lewandowski and links to clubs in Spain and England.

“It is said that the appreciation is not enough for him, I can’t hear that anymore. No player has received as much appreciation as Lewandowski has at Bayern in the last 20 years."

Will Lewandowski leave Bayern?

There’s no doubt that some around the Munich club will be worrying about Lewandowski’s long-term commitment to the club and they certainly should be if the likes of Barca and Man Utd are keen on signing the forward.

However, Bayern fans have been here before and it certainly seems as though Lewandowski and his agent start ruffling a few feathers during negotiations before ultimately signing a new deal with Bayern.

Of course, Lewandowski has always harboured dreams of playing football in Spain one day, but it remains unlikely that Barca would be willing to pay out for the striker this summer.
