Borussia Dortmund are weighing up whether or not to sell Gio Reyna, according to German media.

The United States men's national team star is coming off a tough season. Besides the fact that Dortmund missed out on the Bundesliga title in heartbreaking and embarrassing fashion, Reyna did not see much game time at his club, while being the subject of controversy at the international level.

Apart from a short run where he scored consistently as a super sub, Reyna struggled for minutes under new/old Black and Yellow boss Edin Terzic. Even after overcoming some recurring fitness issues, Terzic rarely gave the American - who is still only 20 years old - a chance to impress.

The head coach urged patience and caution given Reyna's repeated struggles with injury, but beneath the surface it became clear that Terzic did not favour the creative attacker. It must also be said, however, that when Reyna had his chance to start, he didn't take it.

At the national team level, Reyna was also embroiled in a dispute with Gregg Berhalter at the 2022 World Cup that ultimately saw old instances of domestic abuse involving the coach come to light after the player's parents took exception to the way their son was treated.

Reyna to be sold?

According to BILD, Dortmund are now considering selling Reyna this summer in what is not a particularly shocking turn of events. On the face of it, this appears to be the ideal course of action for both parties.

There is no point in the German club keeping the 20-year-old around if the coach does not favour him, nor has he shown enough to justify being a starter for a team that wants to challenge for the title again next season.

For Reyna, this is also a great opportunity. Despite his struggles, he is clearly a very talented player and going to a club where he will play week in and week out will be transformative for his career.
