Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is set to be given the opportunity to solve two problems in one transfer deal, with Bayern Munich ready to hand the Dutchman the opportunity to sign Ryan Gravenberch and offload Scott McTominay.

Reports in Germany indicate that Bayern hold an interest in the 26-year-old Scotland international and could give the Red Devils the opportunity to use him as a makeweight in a deal for Gravenberch.

Man Utd are known to be in the market for a defensive midfielder, though Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat has been their first option for weeks.

Gravenberch, though, has emerged as a strong backup candidate and could come firmly into the picture if this deal, which was reported by Sky Germany, comes to fruition.

Bild adds that the McTominay transfer could take the form of a loan, which would likely see Gravenberch move to United in a similar deal.

This would leave the door open for Man Utd to complete a transfer for Amrabat next summer, when he will be a free agent as he only has a year left on his Fiorentina contract.

Bayern McTominay interest ideal for Man Utd

For Ten Hag this is a dream scenario as it would give him the opportunity to audition Gravenberch in a similar role. He clearly does not see McTominay as his man, having used him for only five minutes of the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend, despite Mason Mount being injured.

There appears to be little prospect of McTominay joining Bayern if the Bundesliga champions cannot find a home for Gravenberch, so the Scotsman going to the Allianz Arena would severely complicate any deal for Amrabat this summer.

Man Utd have worked closely with Bayern in the past, with Marcel Sabitzer moving to Old Trafford on loan late in the January transfer window following an injury to Christian Eriksen.

Ten Hag could use his existing connections at the club to help smooth another deal, which could see McTominay and Gravenberch trade teams in a surprise loan swap.
