El-Ghazi threatened with legal action after doubling down on Palestine posts

Anwar El-Ghazi remains in the midst of a storm with Mainz over his social media statements in support of Palestine over the current conflict with Israel in the Middle East.
El-Ghazi appeared to have been released by the Bundesliga side in the wake of a now-deleted social media post from 17 October.
The Dutchman, however, was simply suspended by Mainz, who welcomed him back to training on Monday.
El-Ghazi, who was linked with a summer move to Manchester United, did not appear and on Wednesday once again posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, calling for peace in the Gaza Strip.
“For the avoidance of doubt, my statement on 27 October 2023 was my only and final statement both to FSV Mainz 05 and the public relating to the social media posts made by me over the last few weeks,” he stated.
“Any other statements comments or apologies to the contrary attributed to me are not factually correct and have not been made or authorised by me.”
After further outlining his position, he said: “I do not regret or have any remorse for my position. I do not distance myself from what I said and I stay, today and always until my last breath, for humanity and the oppressed.
“I do not owe special responsibility to any state I do not believe any people of states are beyond question or accountacility nor are they above International law.
“I have no choice but to stand firm for justice and beat witness to the truth and would do so even if it was against me, my parents, my relatives and kinsmen.
“There can bever be any justification for the killing of over 3,500 children in Gaza in the last three weeks. How can we as a world remain silent when according to the charity Save the Children, one child is being killed every 10 minutes in Gaza. There’s nine children killed by the time I complete one football match. That number is rising by the day.
“I and we as a world, cannot conscionably remain silent.
“We must call for an end to the killing in Gaza now.”

Mainz considering options
Mainz offered a quick response via an official statement threatening legal against the attacker.
“Mainz 05 fail to understand and are surprised by Anwar El Ghazi’s statement on his social media channels relating to the club,” the Bundesliga outfit stated.
“The club will examine the facts from a legal standpoint and then evaluate the situation.
“The player took sick leave on Monday and is not currently training.”
