Barcelona are currently going through a tumultuous period in their history both on and off the pitch, with club finances impacting things negatively,

The Blaugrana are well over €1 billion in debt and in the summer of 2021, they were ordered by La Liga to drastically reduce their wage bill to meet new regulations.

This is what ultimately led to the departure of high-earning players like Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Miralem Pjanic.

The only significant money that has been spent over the last two years has been on Sergino Dest and Emerson Royal, and even with the latter he was subsequently sold to Tottenham for a profit.

FOOTBALLTRANSFERS' MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS IN THE WORLD

Barcelona's troubles come from a combination of the financial impact of the pandemic as well as gross overspending on wages and transfers over the past decade.

Xavi is now the head coach after replacing Ronald Koeman, and the legendary midfielder will need funds to improve his squad.

As such, the majority of players at Camp Nou are up for sale with a couple of notable exceptions like Pedri and Ansu Fati.

One of the players allegedly up for sale, according to Jose Alvarez of El Chiringuito, is Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman remains highly rated at Camp Nou, but the club feel that he is one of a few players in the squad who would command a high transfer fee due to his quality and age.

His departure is only considered as a possibility now due to the emergence of Pedri, Gavi and Nico in the midfield area.

Will De Jong leave?

Barcelona will not push De Jong to go and will only consider an exorbitant fee to sell him, while the player himself is apparently happy in Barcelona.

Spanish outlet Sport reports that the former Ajax midfielder is not considering an exit for himself and is keen to help the club get back to an elite level, with him also being settled in the city from a personal standpoint.

Furthermore, Xavi is a fan of De Jong and wants him as a part of his new-look midfield going forward.

Any decision may be taken out of his hands, however, if Barcelona receive a healthy bid.

How much would De Jong cost?

According to our FootballTransfers algorithm, De Jong is valued at €85m, though Barcelona would likely accept an offer slightly lowe.
