Reports initially broke in Spain early on Monday that the forward will be forced to hang up his boots.

And Barcelona have now confirmed that Aguero will make an announcement on Wednesday about his future. It is expected that this announcement will confirm that he is indeed retiring.

Barcelona tweeted on Tuesday: "@aguerosergiokun will give a statement on his future from Camp Nou at 12pm CET (11am UK time) on Wednesday December 15. The first-team football player will be joined by FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta."

A five-time Premier League winner, he will be best remembered at Manchester City for scoring the title-clinching goal of 2011-12, netting deep into stoppage time on the final day of the season against QPR to deny Manchester United the crown.

Aguero spent a decade at the Etihad Stadium before moving to Camp Nou this summer, but his time at Camp Nou proved to be something of a nightmare.

He joined the club in order to team up with close friend Lionel Messi, but the forward was forced into a move to Paris Saint-Germain for financial reasons.

Aguero then suffered an injury in pre-season that meant he was unable to make his debut for the club until October 17 against Valencia.

He scored his first goal for Barcelona in the Clasico, though it proved to be a late consolation against Real Madrid.

Aguero was set to miss at least another three months of action after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia in a game versus Alaves in October.

He was brought off the pitch after complaining of dizziness as well as chest pains.

Barcelona subsequently released a statement confirming that Aguero would be unavailable until 2022 as he would undergo a rehabilitation process for his heart issues.

"Sergio Aguero has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr Josep Brugada," the statement read.

"He is unavailable for selection and during the next three months the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process."

Aguero has taken the decision to not return to the pitch on health grounds and a press conference to announce his retirement will take place on Wednesday. The news was first broken by Radio Marca.

Journalist Emilio Perez de Rozas has revealed that a farewell has already been planned, saying: "As I have the information, Barcelona have prepared his farewell,"

Aguero himself previously denied initial reports that he was set to retire, writing on Twitter: "Given the rumours, I can say that I am following the instructions of the club's doctors, doing tests and treatment and checking my progress within 90 days. Always positive."

His former team-mate Samir Nasri contradicted that, revealing that Aguero had actually told him he will be forced to retire.
