Haaland to Barca? Laporta make stunning transfer claim
Could Barcelona sign Erling Haaland in the summer? According to president Joan Laporta, a deal for the Borussia Dortmund forward should not be written off.
Barca have already conducted business in January by swooping to sign Manchester City forward Ferran Torres for an initial €55 million. However, their delicate financial position means that they have been unable to register the Spain international.
Indeed, Ferran will be unable to make his Barcelona debut until they have brought their wage bill down, which means offloading at least one player.
This is a situation that echoes the club’s problems of registering Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero at the start of the season after they arrived on free transfers.
Moreover, the club is more than €1.3 billion in debt and badly needs to renovate its Camp Nou home.
With this backdrop, a move for Haaland, who has a release clause variously reported to be between €75-100m, appears impossible.
Laporta, though, says that Barcelona can confound their critics on this front.
Laporta promises Barcelona resurgence
Speaking on Monday, he said: “Haaland? Our obligation is to build a great team. Anything is possible if we do well. And I am sure we will do well.”
“Very soon we will see the sporting resurgence of Barca.
“All the biggest players contemplate the possibility of coming to Barca.
“In the moment that we are in, we have to look at the economic situation, but we are improving and everything is possible.
“There are some urgent needs this season to try to win as much as possible.
“The result against Mallorca was very important and we now have Linares in the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa, that we will try to win, and we are in the Europa League.
“The team has needs and we want to ensure the coach is content.
“The arrival of Ferran was very important for the project.”
Dembele latest
Barcelona chief Mateu Alemany, meanwhile, offered a brief update on the situation of Ousmane Dembele, whose contract is up at the end of the season.
“There has been contact with the player’s representatives for five months,” Alemany told Sport.
“They know the position of the club, we want him to stay and they know it. They have the renewal offer.
“I don’t know if I can expand much more, they know all of the scenarios and we are waiting for a definitive answer on his part.”
