Real Madrid have launched an ambitious bid to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain during the January transfer window.

Mbappe’s future has dominated the football transfer news agenda for months, with the World Cup winner out of contract at the end of the season.

Although there remains a chance that he will choose to sign a new deal with PSG, the odds are stacked overwhelmingly in the favour of Madrid when it comes to the attacker’s 2021/22 club.

Indeed, it appears a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ he makes a move.

PSG turned down the chance of recouping €200 million on the forward last summer, ignoring Real Madrid’s offers despite knowing that they stand to lose Mbappe for nothing in the summer.

With that in mind, the Spanish club are looking to lock the attacker down in January for €50m – still a handsome price to pay for a player with just six months left on his deal.

This has been confirmed by Italian agent Giovanni Branchini.

“It depends on PSG now, as Real Madrid have gone back in for Mbappe by offering €50m a few days ago,” Branchini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I don't know how this will play out. It seems to me that this move from Florentino Perez is worth watching closely.

“It would be a shame for a player like Mbappe to move for free in the summer. I don't know what they think about this in Paris.”

The prospects of Mbappe signing for Real Madrid this month look slim – not least because PSG will face the Spanish club in the last 16 of the Champions League. It would be humiliating for them if they were to be knocked out of Europe by a player they sold a matter of weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, PSG do not need to be driven financially like many other clubs because of their Qatari ownership.

Mbappe, then, looks likely to remain with PSG until the summer, at which point he is likely to make a free transfer to Real Madrid.
