Barcelona CEO resigned over signing of Premier League star
On Tuesday Barcelona confirmed the departure of club CEO Ferran Reverter after he chose to resign from his position at the Spanish club.
In a statement on the club website, the Catalan giants stated that Reverter was stepping down from his position due to “personal and family reasons”.
“It is now almost a year since I left Germany to return to Barcelona for family reasons and shortly after I accepted the offer that I received from president Joan Laporta to become CEO of the club,” said the departing Barca boss.
“These have been passionate months and I thank the president for his trust and, above all, his enthusiasm and capacity for leadership that means FC Barcelona now has a first class executive team that is able to reposition Barca as a world leader.
“Personally I have put in much effort and dedication during these months, but I now wish to focus on the reason why I returned to Barcelona, which is to spend more time on personal and family projects.”

However, while Reverter and the club may wish to give the impression of a calm and diligent departure, reports in Spain suggest something else entirely.
Trouble at Camp Nou
According to sports journalist Sique Rodriguez of Cadena SER, Reverter and Barca president Joan Laporta didn’t exactly get along. And it was the club’s January dealings that eventually led to the CEO leaving.
Indeed, Barca raised a number of eyebrows by splashing the cash in the January window when they signed Manchester City forward Ferran Torres for the best part of €50 million in the midst of their own financial crisis.
This, according to the Spanish reports, was a step too far for Reverter and coupled with the club’s new controversial Spotify deal - which could lead to Barca changing the name of their stadium - it seemed like the right time to draw a line in the sand for him.
