Barcelona have made Milan midfielder Franck Kessie a main summer transfer target, and reports in Spain are now suggesting that the deal has virtually been completed.

Kessie has played 20 Serie A matches for Milan this season and has featured five times in the Champions League.

Although the 25-year-old has not necessarily been a starter for the Sani Siro club in recent weeks, it is evident that he has fallen out of favour after a month away on international duty. Prior to that, he was a centrepiece to their side and had even captained them on two occasions.

But just what is it about Kessie that makes him so attractive for Barcelona?

Sport reports there are four real driving factors behind the club’s plan to sign the midfielder.

Why Barcelona want Kessie

Attributes

Perhaps the most obvious reason that Barcelona want to sign Kessie is his on-field qualities. Specifically, Barca feel that they are missing a player of his profile in the squad. He has huge physical capacities and is also capable in front of goal.

Value

With Barcelona still handcuffed by their difficult financial position – they are well over €1 billion in debt – they cannot afford to be spending lavishly on too many big transfers. As such, they are keeping an eye out for high-quality players in the free agent market. Kessie ticks this box. Indeed, Barcelona believe his value to be close to €50 million, so signing him for nothing is a coup.

Age

The 25-year-old is coming into his peak years and Barca think that he can be an effective presence for them in the long term. Kessie’s arrival is, therefore, a move with an eye to the next four or five years.

Departures

Barcelona are braced for players to leave their squad in the summer, and specifically in the central midfield area. It is thought that they could be chasing a couple of central midfielders, with Kessie the foremost target.
